Adelaide Art Gallery – International Design Competition
Diller Scofidio & Renfro and Woods Bagot have been chosen as the winners of the International Design competition that drew competitors from all over the world.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Woods Bagot wowed the judges with their design for thecontemporary art gallery and sculpture Park which will be located in Adelaide, SA.
Their proposal included a ‘dramatic super lobby, floating sky galleries’ as well as suspended rooftop garden. The rooftop garden is inspired by ‘minkunthi,’ which translates as ‘relaxing’ in South Australian indigenous language of Kaurna. It will feature a precolonial South Australian landscape, highlighting the deep burnt reds of the ground contrasting with the vibrant greens of the flora.
The art gallery will be in the heart of the city, positioned on the edge of the Botanic Gardens. Widely known for celebrating festivals of all kinds, the proposed art gallery will represent art of all forms and open the community’s eyes to the possibility of new ideas and creatives.
The art gallery will stand on the old ORAH site, transforming it into ‘one of the most significant new arts and cultural destinations of the 21st century’ within Australia.
The glass fronted gallery that would reflect the sky during the day and the low lights of the city at night plans to celebrate all kinds of art, including a large display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture.
Charles Renfro spoke on the design and the process of creating the idea, he says that the building will be uniquely Adelaide with a Global reach, ‘celebrating the city’s world-class cultural offerings.’
These will be varied and broad drawing on inspiration from Adelaide’s vibrant festival scene to its diverse art collection.
